What is a typical cognitive hypnotherapy session like?

You can start to relax as soon as you arrive at my comfortable, informal therapy room for your first session of cognitive hypnotherapy.

A typical session lasts for about an hour. The first session is a little longer – normally 90 minutes – because I want to understand more about the change you want to make. During that first session I will be asking you about what you have been experiencing. I want you to feel confident about working with me so I’ll explain a bit about cognitive hypnotherapy, and hypnosis.

After that initial session I will be working with you to resolve your problem. Cognitive hypnotherapy is a bespoke approach and your treatment will be personalized to you. We may agree some ‘actions’ for you to do between sessions such as practicing the techniques I’ve shown you. I may record a hypnotic track for you to listen to which will reinforce the work we have done.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on the nature of your problem. You might be surprised how quickly you start to feel better. Some problems only require two sessions but for most, a programme of 4 to 6 sessions will achieve long-lasting change.

Evening and Saturday morning sessions are available so you don’t need to take time off work and you can fit your sessions into your busy life.

Will I lose control if you hypnotise me?

Definitely not. Hypnotherapy does not require deep forms of trance in order to be effective. We all go in and out of trance every day. There have probably been times when you have been driving along a familiar route and you arrived at your destination without remembering the journey. That’s because you have been in a light form of trance.

During therapy you may have your eyes closed but you will not be asleep and you will still be able to hear as normal and move as normal. At the end of the hypnotherapy session you will either open your eyes naturally or when prompted by me.

You can’t be made to do anything or say anything under hypnosis that is against your will or principles. But I wouldn’t ask you to do anything like that anyway. You will generally experience a relaxing state that’s a bit like day dreaming

What’s special about Cognitive Hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy has evolved by gaining insights from a range of current psychological and therapeutic disciplines including Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Positive Psychology and Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR). This means that as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist I have a wide range of tools and techniques to help you get over your problems.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a client-based approach that uses the light states of trance that we all experience every day. Your sessions will be tailored to meet your specific needs. We will be working together to achieve the changes you want to make but you have control and responsibility for your progress – I’m there to assist you to use your own resources.

How much will it cost?

If you’re not sure whether cognitive hypnotherapy is right for you, you can have a FREE 30 minute session so that we have an informal chat about your issue and you can decide whether this is the right approach for you.

I don’t have time to come and see you. What can I do?

If you are not in the Hertfordshire area, or if you don’t have time to come and see me, we can work very effectively over Zoom.
